Tim Cahill scores at the World Cup
June 13, 2014

For many, it was a routine World Cup game: an overmatched underdog overcome by a superior opponent. To us, it was historic. And it wasn't the victor who entered Metro annals; it was the loser, Australia. Tim Cahill's Australia.

Tim Cahill scored for Australia at the World Cup. A current Metro scored at the World Cup: an event so rare that it happened only once before. For a moment, the whole world saw it: Goal Australia #4, Tim Cahill, New York Red Bulls (USA). One of our own scored on the world's biggest stage.

Not even a quarter hour in, the game seemed to be over. Chile scored in the 12th and 14th minute, and it looked to be a question of how many the South Americans will score. But the Australians settled, and then, in the 35th, we got our moment. How else, but with Cahill's head, as he knocked home a cross from close range. He joined a rare club of players who scored at three different World Cups.

After receiving a yellow card, apparently for arguing, Cahill almost tied the game. In fact, a second header of his found the back of the net midway through the second half. Unfortunately for Australia, it was correctly called offside.

Chile made it 3:1 in injury time, and Australia's valiant effort fell short. But they and Cahill can hold their head high after such a gutsy performance. As for us, we now have Clint Mathis against South Korea in 2002 and Cahill against Chile in 2014. And you know what? Cahill still has two games left...
