Media Day with Dax McCarty
March 4, 2014

MetroFanatic: Dax, you're a little late to the proceedings.
Dax McCarty: We know. Apparently, they don't budget two and a half hours in rush hour to get through the Lincoln Tunnel.

MF: I see you're clean shaven this year again.
DM: That just happened recently. I was thinking, I don't know if I want to go scruffy or clean-shaven, so I just decided to shave.

MF: That being said... the goal last year vs Salt Lake, one of the most amazing things in the history of soccer!
DM: I think if you were to rank it among the moments of the game, it probably, I don't know, maybe not top 10, but top 20 soccer moments in history.

MF: And the celebration was pretty good, too.
DM: Hey, I just did whatever came to me. It's natural.

MF: Now, what many of our fans don't realize, is that you actually played for DC for half a year.
DM: I did, I did.

MF: Do you just want to forget that ever happened?
DM: You know what, I would like to say for the fans that yeah, I forgot about it like it never happened. That would probably be preferable, but to me, I was glad that it happened. That was a learning moment for me as a player. That was something I never experienced before.

MF: Being on a horrible team like that?
DM: (laughs) Ugh... Yeah, we can say that.

MF: You just did!
DM: To me, going through what I went through made me a better player, and ultimately helped me become a player I am now for New York.

MF: Speaking of other teams, some people think that you will bolt to Orlando next season.
DM: (laughs) No. That's not gonna happen.

MF: On record!
DM: I want to be in New York for as long as they'll have me.

MF: New York vs Orlando, you can't really compare.
DM: Of course. Everyone would always love to play in front of friends and family, that's definitely no secret. At some point, before my career ends, it would be fun to play in Orlando for a year. All I want to make sure is that everyone understands, is that I've been the happiest that I've ever been in my career in New York. As long as the fans will have me, as long as the club will have me, I would like to stay here for the majority of my career.

MF: The fans will definitely have you. You're pretty much the senior statesman here.
DM: Yeah, I've been here for a while.

MF: My five-year-old asks about the best players on the team...
DM: (laughs)

MF: And I tell him, Titi, of course, and Cahill, and then it's you, Dax!
DM: As long as your five-year-old knows and respects that, then I'm ok. I'm happy with it.

MF: So you do have quite a following. Why is that, the debonair good looks, or...
DM: I think it's a combination of things. It's my charm, my good looks, it's my affability. I am a pretty nice guy, pretty easy-going. I think in another life, I was probably a stand-up comedian.

MF: Well, maybe that can be your life after soccer.
DM: Yeah! I've considered it. I've considered a lot of things, but stand-up comedy is something that absolutely can happen.

MF: That would be great to see, then you can be the halftime show at Red Bull Arena... or Orlando.
DM: Exactly. And even if the fans don't like my jokes, maybe they will just give me a pity laugh or something.
