John Wolyniec has scored a lot of goals for Metro. 32, in fact, coming into tonight. And those 32 goals came in 32 games. Not once has he found the back of the net twice in one contest... until now. The veteran scored the first and the last goals of the match, as New York knocked out New England out of the Open Cup, 3:0. Sinisa Ubiparipovic had the other tally, as Metro beat the Revs for the first time since 2005.

Once again, Clever Hans Backe's lineup had only one starter from the last regular season game. This time it was Tony Tchani; he was joined in midfield by Ubiparipovic, Brian Nielsen, and Jeremy Hall (that's right, Jeremy Hall in midfield!). Greg Sutton was in goal, Danleigh Borman, Andrew Boyens, Carlos Mendes, and Chris Albright on defense, with last Open Cup game hero Conor Chinn partnering Wolyniec up front.

In the 36th minute, a through ball from Nielsen found Chinn, who beat the Rev offside trap, finding himself all alone with the goalkeeper. The nationally ranked striker shot straight into Bobby Shuttleworth, but thankfully Wolyniec was lurking behind, at the edge of the box. The Staten Island Ronaldo's initial shot was blocked, but the rebound went straight back to Woly, who made sure his next effort found the back of the net.

Chinn had two excellent chances to double the lead later in the half. On the first, Borman got behind the defense, and sent a cross to Conor in the box, but the striker tripped over his own feet. Wolyniec pounced on the ball, but shot high. Then, Albright walked into the Rev penalty area, and found Chinn, who was lurking at the goalmouth. Sadly, his effort to redirect the ball into the net was met by Shuttleworth's hands.

In the 62nd minute, Metro doubled the lead. With a free kick just outside the left corner of the box, all the Revs expected Nielsen to bend the ball into the penalty area. Instead, the Dane passed it short to Ubiparipovic, who sent a low driving shot through the area and into the net.

Metro wasn't done. Soon after, the Revs failed to clear the ball, Ubiparipovic sent a shot straight at Shuttleworth, and Wolyniec was there to knock home the rebound. It was his fifth all-time goal in Open Cup play, tying Amado Guevara's team record.

Coming up next in the Open Cup: Colorado. Bring it on!

Oh, and Khano Smith still sucks.

Lineup: Sutton, Borman, Mendes, Boyens, Albright, Ubiparipovic, Hall, Tchani, Nielsen, Wolyniec, Chinn. Subs: Sassano, Garcia, Agudelo.
