Metro playoff scenarios (2 games left)
October 9, 2007

So now that the dust has settled and Metro is guaranteed a playoff spot, who will they play in the first round? We do know some things: they can finish no higher than third in the East and no lower than fifth. Finishing third will likely give them a first-round date with New England (unless the Revs win their last two games while DC loses out), fourth will create a series with DC, and fifth will send them out West to battle either Chivas USA or Houston. So what scenarios does Metro need to finish where?

Since Metro plays Kansas City this weekend, a win -- and a win only -- over the Wizards would guarantee New York the third seed for the playoffs. A tie or a loss would leave the door open for a Metro-Wiz position reversal in the season's final week.

However, there are several scenarios that will assure Metro will not finish fifth in the East and avoid the Western shift. They are:

  • A win (obviously, as it would clinch the third seed as described above)
  • A tie AND a Chicago tie
  • A Chicago loss

That said, the preference of finishing third and facing a New England team that Metro hasn't beaten in two years can be debated. And there's something in the potential chance of Metro becoming Western Conference champions... Something, but we're not sure what.
