Last-minute Chicago goal thwarts Metros
September 1, 2001
For the second straight home game, the Metros had the man advantage for most of the match, and for the second straight home game, they ended up on the losing side, this time falling to Chicago, 1:0 on a very late Demo Kovalenko goal.
The Metros went up a man when C.J. Brown was shown a red card in the 25th minute for a foul on Billy Walsh. Up a man for the rest of the game, the Metros could not convert, with a goal being called offside after Adolfo Valencia put it in the back in the net midway through the first half. In the second, the referee had an awful no-call when Valencia was taken down by Thornton in the box. The game looked to be headed into overtime when Kovalenko converted on a scramble in the box and set the Metros to the locker room with the loss.
And a special praise must go to William Walsh, whose amazing skills can only be rivaled by the intelligence of his fans. Nick, it's time to get rid of the last dead wood from the 1999 season. Show Walsh the door. We are sure he'll gladly take the option. He doesn't want to be here anyway.
Lineup: Howard, Petke, Jolley, Semioli, Alvarez, Hernandez, Walsh, Chung, Villegas, Valencia, Faria. Subs: Gilmar.
