Media Day with Peter Canero
March 28, 2006

MetroFanatic: Peter, as a guy who has experience in British soccer, how does the level of play compare to what you've seen in MLS thus far?
Peter Canero: Well, it's pretty hard to tell so far since we haven't played a competitive game yet. I think there's a lot more passing, a lot more movement. Maybe it's not as physical, you know, there's less use of high-ball tactics like over there. But it's pretty similar in how hard everyone works to win, the enthusiasm everyone has for playing the game. It's really not that different.

MF: You came here from the SPL, it's a pretty big deal that a player in his prime would sign here from a well-known league like that. Do you think your move will open the door for other players to follow?
PC: Yeah, I think there are a lot of younger guys that should start to think about making the trip over. You know, it's frowned upon a lot because many people don't know a lot about the league here. I've heard positive things from Mo and a lot of other people about their time here, and that's why I felt it was a good opportunity for me. Hopefully, if things go well, it'll open that door for other people to play here.

MF: You're someone who grew up around the culture of British soccer, where the background and name of the club is very important to most fans. From your point of view, what do you think of the Red Bull acquisition and re-branding? Is it positive, or is there a stigma attached to corporate involvement on this level?
PC: I think... a lot of people would look at it as more of a publicity stunt than as a sports thing. But I think that when you change the name, some people aren't going to like it no matter what. You know, It's hard to comment on how other people might perceive the change, I can only really comment on what it's like as a player. As a player, I think it will be a positive thing because they're going to focus on promoting the team and advertising, build interest in the team in this city. I think in the end everyone will benefit from it, the fans and the players.

MF: In the preseason you showed that you're a versatile guy, you can play a number of positions. Do you have any indication as to where we'll see you line up on Sunday?
PC: I can't really say for sure right now, the coaching staff still has to make that decision on where we're going to play. You mentioned I'm a versatile player, I'm fully confident that I can play in the back or in the midfield area. I'm comfortable playing in many different roles, and wherever I play I'll do well.
