Media Day with Giovanni Savarese
March 21, 2005

MetroFanatic: Gio, it's great to have you back on the team, although in a very different capacity. How has the league changed since you were last here?
Giovanni Savarese: First of all, I am very happy to be back to the MetroStars. It is great that it passed ten years, and the league is still here. Many people didn't think that the league is gonna last and we're in the tenth year, which is great. But in the level of American player has grown and it is better, and I think that little by little the league is getting more consistent. I think there are a lot of positive things with the inclusion this year of the reserve league, it's gonna give a lot of opportunities for players to play Major League Soccer.

MF: What exactly is your role gonna be?
GS: I'll be the Director of Youth Development, I'll be directing all the teams underneath the first team, and trying to create a new and straight path for the kids to develop and hopefully make it to the professional level.

MF: Do you remember the goal against Tampa Bay, the bicycle kick?
GS: I remember exactly how everything developed. It was a great cross, I remember, it couldn't come in a better time for us, we needed a win, there was a large crowd, and it was just a great moment. One of the goals I remember most.

MF: Do you have a message for the fans who have been with this team for ten years?
GS: I just think that it's great for all those fans, I have to take my hat off, and say thank you so much for being a supported of the MetroStars. Sometimes you haven't had the recognition or the reward that you deserve, and hopefully you will keep on supporting the team, supporting us, and you can have a winning team, a team that's gonna win a championship soon.

MF: If there are some injuries, can you still play?
GS: (laughs) No, no, even though I feel good, to still play, I would do it in a second. Right now, I am trying to do a role in the office, and trying to concentrate on that. I think that whenever someone makes a transition, they gotta stick to that. I don't see myself going back to playing for sure.
