Nick-o-lodeon: January 2002
Ridge Mahoney - Soccer America; January 15, 2002
Extensive roster moves aren't the only changes in store for the Metros.
Nick Sakiewicz will attend inauguration ceremonies Tuesday for New Jersey governor Jim McGreevey in the Metros GM's quest to secure political backing for a proposed soccer stadium in Harrison.
In addition to an existing sports and entertainment bill to which was attached the Metros' stadium project, the team is seeking its own piece of legislation to fund the stadium and an adjoining parking deck at a cost of approximately $130 million.
"If either is approved, we'll be all set to break ground this summer," said Sakiewicz, who believes a new stadium can be ready in time for the 2004 season.
The stadium and parking deck are part of a major retail and residential development project that will cost an estimated $900 million.
"That project is going ahead with or without us," said Sakiewicz, "but we plan to be ready."
State sales taxes would pay for most of the stadium and parking deck. The team would pay $7.5 million up front and earmark a portion of its share of parking revenues.
The stadium design has been tweaked several times and is not yet finalized. Sakiewicz says it will seat 24,000 and be roofed on the sides adjoining the touchlines.
