Guevara signed. Really. Officially.
April 11, 2003 (Official Press Release)

The MetroStars today acquired Honduran National Team midfielder Amado Guevara as an allocation and signed him to a multi-year contract. The all-time leader in caps with 76 for the Honduran National Team, Guevara will be joining the Metros after his third stint with CD Motagua of the Honduran first division. Guevara becomes the MetroStars second Senior International (Jaime Moreno) of the three designated to each club in MLS. Guevara will likely join the team next Thursday and will be eligible for the MetroStars match on Saturday, April 19 against the Los Angeles Galaxy at Giants Stadium, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET.

"I am happy all the paperwork is done and I am able to join the MetroStars as soon as possible," said Guevara. "I am ready for this new challenge and I will do the best I can with my teammates to make everyone proud of the team."

"We are very excited to bring Amado to the MetroStars," said MetroStars Head Coach Bob Bradley. "We feel that he is a player with the talent and experience to help make the MetroStars a better team."

A well-traveled midfielder throughout Central America, Guevara's skills have been utilized by perennial Honduran powerhouse Olimpia and Motagua before traveling to Spain to play with Real Valladolid CF in the famed La Liga (Spanish First Division) for the 1995-96 season. Guevara has also found his way to Tigres and Zacatepec in Mexico, along with a season with Costa Rican power Saprissa. After his stint in Costa Rica, he returned to Motagua and led the team into the 2003 FC Champions Cup. In the tournament, the team faced the Los Angeles Galaxy in a two-legged, total goals Round of 16 match-up in March. Guevara scored the team's two goals in a first leg match in Honduras to tie the Galaxy 2-2, but L.A. advanced with a 1-0 home win a week later.

"We are very pleased that Amado and his family have decided to come to New York," said MetroStars General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. "He is a quality midfielder with the character and team spirit that will help us win. Adding his experience and attacking style with a knack for scoring goals will make our team better."

Guevara will don jersey number 20 for the MetroStars, which has been the same he wears for Honduras.
