Media Day with Clint Mathis
April 9, 2003
MetroFanatic: What's going to be the difference between last year and this year for you?
Clint Mathis: We've got a lot of new faces; I'm excited to play with Jaime and Eddie and Richie, those guys that have been on championship teams. Hopefully they bring that winning attitude here to the MetroStars.
MF: Last year Octavio Zambrano said some things about you late in the season, do you have any thoughts on that now?
CM: Nah, nothing. Not a big deal at all. I didn't worry too much about it last year, and I'm not going to worry about it now at all.
MF: Talk about Bob Bradley, your new coach.
CM: He brings a lot to the table. He's a big motivator, who expects a lot out of each and every player. I think he pulls 100% of everybody's ability out of them; he's expecting a lot out of us. He pushes us hard, wants us to work hard and I'm very excited to have him here.
MF: You don't seem to worry about how you're perceived by the fans and the media.
CM: No, the only thing I can do is go out and play good soccer. I think that's all that anybody really expects. So no matter what I do, people are going to have their perceptions, or the perception that the media portrays. I can't worry about that. I'm here to do a job. I need to go from there, and everything else will work out for itself. People can have a good perception or a bad perception, but as long as I'm doing my job, that's all I think anyone can expect of me.
MF: Heading into the last year of your contract, do you expect to be in MLS next year?
CM: We'll have to see. The only thing I'm really concentrating on right now is playing good soccer.
MF: Last year you had the Mohawk and the porno mustache, anything cool like that in store for this year?
CM: (laughs) I don't know. We'll have to see what happens, if I feel a little frisky one day, I guess.
