Media Day with Joe Addo
April 9, 2003

MetroFanatic: What are your thoughts on the season, and your place on this team?
Joe Addo: I think we have a stronger team than we had last year, a good bunch of players, so hopefully we'll do well this year. As for me, if I don't play well they won't ever offer me a contract, so I've got to work hard every day. We'll see.

MF: There's a lot of young players on this team, and you're one of the senior players - how does that affect what you're doing?
JA: I knew coming in this year that I wasn't going to be a starter, which I accept. But being the player that I am, this is my 10th year as a professional player, I know what it takes to be in the team. My motivation is very, very high and I'll work very hard to be in the team. As for the young players, I was a young player once. My objective was to take away the old player's position. But I'll make it very difficult for them, which will make this team a good team.

MF: In terms of your experience, 10 years of experience, when you look at this team, what do you see in terms of differences from last year's team?
JA: I think what the coach is trying to establish is correct, for us to be friends. We don't have to call each other and say 'hey, how are you doing', but on the field we should like each other so much that we want to work for each other. We didn't have that last year. So that's what he's working on and I think the players we have here have the ability to do that. Because we all get along, we tease each other, we go out on the field and work hard, so I think he's getting something done. We might not see the rewards in the next few months, but in the long run it will be a better team.

MF: You've been in the league for 4 years; what difference do you see in the level of the league?
JA: I think it's improved every year. When I first came, the attendance wasn't as good as it is now. And seeing the MLS Cup last year, seeing the stadium in Foxboro full, that was a great sight for me. I wish I was playing that day. Knowing that, we players are very excited, to see that amount of fans, or even more than that. So the league is improving, and I think it will continue to grow, provided we have the caliber of players we have. Good young players, good foreign players who come in and make it a top place to play, not just somebody comes in to take money and relax. You have to come here, and earn whatever you make. I think the league is improving year by year.

MF: Any of the new guys, especially the young guys, really impress you so far?
JA: Ricardo Clark. I would say that without a doubt. He really impressed me during this offseason. When he met us in Argentina, immediately I could see traces of class; he's not yet a great player, but he's working very hard at it, and he's got qualities that I don't think some 20 year olds have. He works very hard, he's very serious about practice, he doesn't complain, he's always running. Players like that go a long way. That's how I started. He's one player that I think is going to make it in this team.
