Misery in Atlanta
November 25, 2018

3:0
Atlanta New York
Martinez
Escobar
Villalba

11.25.18 · Playoff

We can blame the call... OK, we're going to start by blaming the call.

Early in the second half, Metro down 1:0, but still very much in it, awarded a free kick in Atlanta territory. The ball is swung into the penalty area, where Aaron Long redirects it to Bradley Wright-Phillips, who his it into the net... Game tied, Metro has a road goal, all is well!

Except it wasn't. Kevin Stott, who has been refereeing poorly since before of current MLS teams existed, decided to go to VAR, which determined that Alex Muyl was in an offside position. Alex Muyl, who played no role in the goal. Well, not goal, but "goal", since Stott wiped it out, and Metro stayed down...

And then Metro went down further, and then further, into a 3:0 hole that seems inescapable. This season, which looked to be magical, is now teetering at the edge of the abyss... if it hasn't crashed into it already.

But we will also blame Chris Armas, who -- don't get us wrong -- has done a marvelous job after taking over, but who really outsmarted himself in this one. Ditching the press in the first half and deciding to let Atlanta control the play was his doom. If Metro started the game by being themselves, it is not likely they would have been put in this predicament.

So now we wait four days for what will surely be the end point of this supposedly spectacular season. As much as we try to always have hope...

It's hard to find it in this misery.

Lineup: Robles, Lade, Long, Parker, Murillo, Adams, Davis, Muyl, Royer, Romero Gamarra, Wright-Phillips. Subs: Etienne, Rzatkowski, White.
