Kljestan gets 20th assist
October 25, 2016
Sacha Kljestan recorded the 20th assist of the season, and he didn't even have to play a game. Alright, that's not entirely true: the game was played on Sunday, and MLS decided to award Kljestan (and Dax McCarty) assists retroactively.
Originally, the goal by Alex Muyl that set the final margin at 2:0 was marked with no assists, as Kljestan's pass was judged to be touched by a Philly player. MLS reversed its decision, giving Kljestan 20.
This marks only the second time in league history that 20 assists has been reached. Kljestan is now alone behind Carlos Valderrama's 26 in 2000. It is also important to note that MLS changed its assist rule in 2002, making helpers much more difficult to get than they were in the league's early years.
