Metro brothers: a thorough history
July 7, 2015

With all the talk about Shaun Wright-Phillips and his "training" stint, we start to think... can we find all Metro players whose brothers also played professionally? After an arduous search, we have our list. You will note that sometimes "professionally" will be used loosely.

Legend: Red grades = 0 to 10, Metro career. Black grades = 0 to 10, non-Metro career. √ = the better brother.

Jeff and Brad Agoos
4 1
DC Scum, San Jose, Metro (2005), USA Quick Den Haag (Netherlands-3), Worcester (A-League)
Came here to retire in 2005 and then became a beyond awful Sporting Director in 2008-09. An ex-assistant at Cal, recommended Jeff sign Leo Krupnik.
Nidal and Imad Baba
1 4
Metro (1996)... and that's it? Revs, Rapids, USA
Was one of the worst players on the 1996 team, cut quickly by Carlos Queiroz. An average early MLS player who played in the 1996 Olympics and even got one cap for USA.
Tim and Chris Cahill
8 2
Millwall, Everton, Metro (2012-14), Shanghai, Australia Semi-pro (Australia), Samoa
Team MVP, MLS Best XI for Supporters Shield winners, a lot of complaining in 2014 He captained the Samoan national team!
Gabriel and Alejandro Cichero
2 5
Deportivo Italia, Metro (2008), Caracas, Nantes, Venezuela Cagliari, Deportivo Italchacao, Litex (Bulgaria), Millonarios, Venezuela
A prime example of a player who had a good career elsewhere, but was absolute crap with Metro. Also a Venezuelan international. Close call, but we ended up with the better Cichero?
John and Pedro DeBrito
2 2
Revs, Metro (1997), KC, Crew, Dallas, USA Tampa Bay (NASL), various indoor teams, one cap for USA
One of the original MLS vagabonds. Played 7 games for Metro in 1997. A good career indoors in the 1980s. Died in a car accident in 2014.
Youri and Misha Djorkaeff
7 1
Grenoble, Strasbourg, Monaco, PSG, Inter, K'lautern, Blackburn, Bolton, Metro (2005), France Ales, Inter (sort of), K'lautern (sort of), various other teams (sort of)
World Cup and Euro winner, Metro MVP, very good son. Used Youri's help to get on reserve teams at Inter and Kaiserslautern. Couldn't get on the field for Luton.
Rodrigo and Ricardo Dos Santos (Digao and Kaka)
0 10
Milan (1 league game), Liege (1 league game), lower Italian teams, Metro (2012-13) Milan, Real Mardid, Orlando, Brazil
Played one minute, made $200,000+. World Cup winner, FIFA player of the year. Now with Orlando, was close to following Digao to Metro in 2012.
Richard and Adam Eckersley
3 3
Man United (2 league games), Bury, Toronto, Metro (2014) Man United (0 league games), Port Vale, Aarhus, Hearts
Don't watch the replay of the last New England goal from the 2014 playoffs. We beg you. How do you pick a better Eckersley? Is it even possible? At least Adam earned some caps for England youth teams...
Sam and Willis Forko
2 4
Metro (2002)... and that's it Salt Lake, Bodo/Glimt, Vancouver (USL), Liberia
Started the first game of the season, got benched, and fell off the face of the Earth. Tried out with Metro in 2012... and failed.
Chris and Sean Henderson
4 3
Colorado, KC, Miami, Columbus, Metro (2006) Colorado, Seattle (A-League)
One of MLS's ironmen, played the last year of his career here. Was teammates with his brother for three years on the Rapids. Two of his four career MLS goals came against Metro.
Martin and Fausto Klinger
0 ½
Metro (2001-02), Atlanta (A-League) Rough Riders, loan to Metro (2001)
One of the worst players in team history. A 0 is a very kind score. For glorious 14 minutes in 2001, both Klingers graced an MLS field. Metro lost 3:1 to Chicago.
Sacha and Gordon Kljestan
7 1
Chivas USA, Anderlecht, Metro (2015-), USA Galaxy (0 league games), Metro (2008), Cleveland, Tampa (USL)
We're hoping for better things from Sacha, but there are some flashes of brilliance here and there. 45 minutes for Metro in a terrible Open Cup loss to Crystal Palace Baltimore. Failed to make the 2009 team as a trialist.
Manny and Gerard Lagos
5 2
Minnesota (A-League), Metro (1996-97), Chicago, Tampa, SJ, Crew, USA Minnesota (A-League)
Always wished he stayed longer with Metro. Now back in Minnesota, coaching United. Spent his entire career with the then-Thunder.
Alexi and Greg Lalas
3 2
Padova, Revs, Metro (1998), KC, Galaxy, USA Tampa, Revs, Worcester (A-League)
Red-headed clown gave Metro fans the finger as a player. Screwed over the entire franchise as GM. Why are we giving the check to Greg? At least he does an adequate job running the MLS website. Screw Alexi.
Dax and Dustin McCarty
8 1
Dallas, DC Scum, Metro (2011-), USA Galaxy (0 league games)
The heart and soul of the team. Ginger Ninja forever! Never played in a league match for the Galaxy, but was part of their MLS Cup-winning team in 2011 (sort of).
Roy and Michael Myers
5 3
Saprissa, Metro (1999-01), Galaxy, Costa Rica Costa Rica, numerous local teams
Three different stints with Metro, but a big part of the 2000 team. No, not the Halloween character or the SNL actor. Teamed up with Roy at the 1993 Gold Cup. Not much otherwise.
Arley and Everth Palacios
4 6
Independiente Medellin, Metro (1998-99), Miami Deportivo Cali, Atletico Nacional, Junior, Shonan (Japan), Colombia
The scuttlebutt is that Metro signed the wrong Palacios in 1998. They ended up with Arley, but they really meant to sign the better brother, Everth, who played in that year's World Cup.
John and Wayne Rooney
2 9
Macclesfield, Metro (2011), Orlando (USL), Chester Everton, Man United, England
Five reserve apperances in league, one goal in the Open Cup. Maybe Wayne can come to Metro in... 2021? 2025? At least John has better hair.
Sinisa and Slavisa Ubiparipovic
5 1
Metro (2007-10), Montreal, Ottawa (NASL) Syracuse (indoor)
MLS Analyst Matt Doyle's favorite player. Had a good run in the 2008 playoffs and one great week in 2010. Tried out with Metro in 2010, didn't make it.
Bradley and Shaun Wright-Phillips
9 7
Man City, Southmapton, Plymouth, Charlton, Metro (2013-) Man City, Chelsea, QPR, England
MLS record 27 league goals in 2014. SWP might be more accomplished on the world stage, but we'll give the check to both. Unless, of course, SWP's "training" turns into a contract, and then... we'll see.
Ronald and Stephane Zubar
3 2
Caen, Marseille, Wolves, Ajaccio, Metro (2015-), Guadeloupe Caen, Plymouth, Bournemouth, York City, Guadeloupe
At least he found a way to score a goal in between all those injuries... Yes, we got the better Zubar brother... but also the more fragile one.
