The return of... Marc de Grandpre?
April 14, 2014
Raise your hand if you saw this one coming. According to BigAppleSoccer, RBNY is thinking of bringing back... Marc de Grandpre in the capacity of "commercial manager", whatever that means.
You remember Marc de Grandpre, don't you? The "executive" with no sports background who was put in charge of the entire club after Red Bull's purchase in 2006. Oh, some of his moves made sense, such as the hiring of Bruce Arena. Some of the moves were completely idiotic... such as the firing of Bruce Arena, perhaps the stupidest move in the 19 years of this (not exactly smart) franchise.
As for de Grandpre's non-soccer decisions? Do you remember the marketing genius of the "Running of the Bulls"? No? To keep our sanity, we will not delve into it.
De Grandpre left the club before the 2009 season to sell something called Purple Energy Drink. "I have been offered an opportunity that I couldn't turn down. This was a decision that I made solely with my family," he said at the time. His current position is Head of Marketing at KIND Snacks, which makes "award-winning whole nut and fruit bars". The man sure loves his energy food and beverages!
Well, at least they are not bringing back Nick Sakiewicz...
