Obscure Metro Files: One-game wonders (update)
November 13, 2013

We first complied the list in 2006, and added to it in 2010... Seems as good a time as any to see if the list of one-game wonders grew!

  • 2010: Carey Talley
With the right back combination of Chris Albright and Jeremy Hull injured and/or struggling, the brass decided to pick up a veteran for the stretch run. A second round pick was traded to DC Scum for Carey Talley. He made his first Metro start in a visit to LA... and got injured 40 minutes in. Talley ended up retiring after the season.

  • 2011: Alex Horwath, Chris Konopka
Terrible starter Greg Sutton suffered a concussion in the season opener, and passable backup Bouna Coundoul was away on international duty (oh, did Hans Backe gnaw his teeth about that!) So newly-signed Horwath was forced to play, and played well, shutting out Columbus in a rather listless scoreless draw. However, when another goaltender crisis hit later in the year, Backe shied away from Horwath. This time, starter Frank Rost could not play because of an injury suffered from sitting on an airplane (you can't make this up), and Coundoul was jet-lagged (two airline-related mishaps at once!). So Metro signed Konopka off MLS's goalkeeper pool (he did play for the Metro reserves previously), and ended up with a rather unremarkable match in a 2:2 tie with Chicago. Horwath was waived after the year. Konopka tried to come back as a preseason trialist in 2012, before latching on with Philly.

  • 2012: Ryan Maduro, Digao
Now here is a combination! Maduro is one of the smallest footnotes in Metro history: he played two minutes in an Open Cup match at Charleston. He was released in July and has since played for something called "Real Boston Rams" (as opposed to "Fake Boston Rams"?). Digao... oh, if only he was a mere footnote. Signed so that Metro have a leg up in pursuit of brother Kaka, his lone appearance came as an injury time substitute in the playoff loss to DC. Somehow, he and his $200,000 salary lasted into 2013, before being finally terminated in July.

  • 2013: Josue Martinez
Acquired from Philly for Sebastien Le Toux, Martinez was a colossal disappointment. After attempts to play him at striker and wing during the preseason failed miserably, he made his one and only appearance in a 11-minute cameo at Montreal in March... then got cut six days after. Since then, he has returned to his first club, Deportivo Saprissa.

Note: as of now, Matt Miazga has only played one match as well... but as he is still on the team, we will not add him to this list just yet. Here's hoping, Matt!
