Mike Grella arrives on trial
August 2, 2013

Today at practice, a mysterious trialist wearing #6 appeared. His identity was quickly revealed by Mike Petke. It is Mike Grella, the once-promising American attacker who spent the last six years in England.

Grella, 26, went to college at Duke, but elected to pass on MLS, signing with Leeds United. He has since played for Carlisle, Swindon Town, Brentford, and Bury. Grella spent last year with the delightfully-named Scunthorpe United in League One, England's third division. He scored a solitary goal in league play as his team got relegated. Grella's contract was terminated after the season.

"One day I'd love to come back and play in MLS," Grella said after signing with Leeds in 2009. "I don't have anything against MLS at all, but the dream of playing in Europe, the fans there are so much more passionate and it's so much more real to me."
