Metro backups dump Philly starters out of Open Cup
April 27, 2010

2:1
New York Philadelphia
Chinn 2 Le Toux
04.27.10 · Open Cup

What a starting lineup! One starter from the weekend: Brian Nielsen. Five players who haven't seen a minute of play this season: Greg Sutton, Carlos Mendes, Andrew Boyens, Luke Sassano, and Juan Agudelo. Seth Stammler. Sinisa Ubiparipovic. Danleigh Borman. Tony Tchani. And Conor Chinn, who, in his first significant playing time as a pro, scored both goals as Metro dumped Philadelphia out of the Open Cup.

The Worms, on the other hand, were in full force. Eleven regulars starting, and while some key players sat, they all made it into the match by the end. Metro? They were giving debuts to 17-year-old Agudelo, previously-injured Chris Albright, as well Austin da Luz and Irving Garcia. Tonight, it didn't matter. Metro 2, Philly 1, for the second time in four days.

It was obvious from early on that even those these were backups, Metro was ready to play. Nielsen, still trying to get match fit, Tchani, as well as semi-regulars Ubiparipovic and Stammler, controlled the midfield. It took 16 minutes for them to break through. A Nielsen cross from the left was poorly cleared by the Worms. Stammler pounced on the ball, slamming it back into the penalty area, where Chinn came up with it. His initial attempt went straight into keeper Chris Seitz, but the one known in Mexico as Guillermo Ortiz followed up for his first Metro goal.

He would get his second one in the 41st minute. Ubiparipovic started the play, getting the ball to Sassano on the right flank. Luke's cross was met by Chinn in the penalty area, who crashed into Seitz, forcing the ball into the net.

That was all Metro needed. In the 68th minute, Sebastien Le Toux got behind the defense to spoil Sutton's shutout bid, but it was too little too late. New York moves on to play New England on May 12th. Philly? Well, they got Nick Sakiewicz to lean on and cry.

Lineup: Sutton, Borman, Mendes, Boyens, Sassano, Stammler, Ubiparipovic, Tchani, Nielsen, Agudelo, Chinn. Subs: Albright, da Luz, Wolyniec, Garcia.
