Q&A with draft pick Eric Brunner
January 22, 2008

Metro's second round draft pick Eric Brunner was kind enough to answer a few questions, just a couple of days after becoming the newest member of the team.

MetroFanatic: Where on defense did you play in college and where do you see yourself playing in MLS?
Eric Brunner: In college I have played everywhere in the back line. My freshman year at UMD, I played right back, at OSU my sophomore year I played left back, and for my last two years of college I played left centerback and right centerback so I'm familiar with it all. Also, in PDL, for the Michigan Bucks I played mostly outside left back but also played centerback. As for MLS, I really feel comfortable in any position on the back line. I like outside back because I can be a little more creative with the ball, but I read the game very well from a centerback perspective. What ever the manager feels is a best fit for me, I can adjust.

MF: You met some Metro supporters at the draft. What is your impression of the fans so far?
EB: I thought the fans were great. I couldn't have been welcomed better anywhere I don't think. It was great that they wanted to meet me right away which is awesome. I can say growing up in a MLS town, that I've never seen fans like the Red Bulls' fans, they are amazing.

MF: Your weight is listed as 170, which seems low for your height. Are you planning to bulk up for your move to MLS or are you more comfortable at your current weight?
EB: I guess I've had to deal with how "skinny" I am for sometime, seems to be a topic of conversation a lot. As for bulking up, I do want to gain weight, but it's not as if I haven't been trying. I put on five lbs during my last college season, so if it's a showing of trends I should start to put on some more pounds. I plan to work out and do the necessary means to gain weight. The main thing for me, is in trying to gain weight, I don't want to loose my coordination or speed. The plus side though is I know how to use my body and my strength. I can put myself in positions to read the play and what the player will do to help me in different situations.

MF: What do you think will be the most difficult part of transitioning from college to the pros?
EB: I think just the speed of play. That's been the common concern for a lot of college players. I think the overall experience of being a professional will be a great transition. Also I think the main thing at the pro level from what I've seen is to be consistent. If you can play consistent day in and day out you're doing yourself a huge favor.

MF: What is your impression of Juan Carlos Osorio?
EB: He is a manager who has a wealth of experience. He knows the game very well, and from what I've heard his training sessions are some of the best. I think he's started his tenure at Red Bulls in the right way with relating to the fans and his players.
