Der Schopp ist geschlossen
December 20, 2007

Markus Schopp, the first player to play for both Red Bull Salzburg and New York, has retired, according to Austrian paper Wiener Zeitung. Schopp, who arrived in MLS late in 2006 on loan from Salzburg, was supposedly earning over a million dollars. For that, Metro received a total of 558 minutes, no goals, one assist, and plenty of diving.

This year, Schopp was supposed to start at right midfield, but a preseason injury led to him losing that spot to rookie Dane Richards. Schopp never regained that position, and was horrible when Bruce Arena tried him for a couple of games at right back. According to various reports, he was often the worst player in practice.

Schopp's departure clears up 175,000 in salary cap space. Whether that will be filled by another Salzburg reject is a whole other story.
