De Grandpre on Arena
November 5, 2007

RBNY Managing Director held a teleconference to discuss Bruce Arena's dismissal. The following is a sample of quotes from the event. We could not guarantee that each word of each quote was spoken, but we tried our best to preserve the important points.

Opening statement: "With the amount of resources that we at Red Bull have committed to the franchise and soccer in North America, our expectations are high, and we want to challenge for a championship every year. I do believe that we made progress this season, but it was not where we wanted to be. We have made a promise to our fans to provide the best quality product on the field. Unfortunately we haven't achieved that promise to this point."

On instability, and is it fair to give best coach in US history just a year and a draft: "I understand that stability is important, but the amount of resources committed, we expect results quickly. Bruce was in charge of the entire soccer operation. Assistant coach status to be determined by new head coach."

On Salzburg input: "None."

On foreign coaches understanding the mentality of American players: "Will consider best coach for the job. Someone who can get our players to do what they ultimately don't want to do."

On player input: "Will consider best coach for the job. Someone who can get our players to do what they ultimately don't want to do."

On Fabio Capello: "Just in process of putting a list together. Capello is not yet on the list."

On the decision being based on dealing with subordinates: "All based on performance on the field."

On would have taken on the field to keep Bruce on: "Win MLS Cup. That was the expectation we set forth." Nothing else good enough? "Not with the resources that have been allocated."

On it being his decision, and not talking to the millionaire owner: "He is supportive of the decision."

On discussing it with the owner: "Yes."

On the timetable: "As soon as we find the right candidate, we'll pull the trigger."

On the goal for the new coach: "[Winning MLS Cup] is the only acceptable goal."

On the salary cap and the realistic expectations: "Expectation is to win every time you play a game."

On change in philosophy, after being read the following quote by owner Dieter Mateschitz from earlier this year, "Winning the championship and reaching the final cannot be our goal just yet. If we reach the semifinals, we would consider that a success.": "It's balance between ultimate objective and performing every day. The semifinals might have been good enough, but we didn't reach ultimate objective."

On the coach / sporting director setup: "We will split positions. Never a conversation for Bruce to remain sporting director. Bruce had no impact on stadium or training facility. You will hear about both projects shortly."

On when will de Grandpre will be made accountable: "I am absolutely accountable for the ultimate objective. Bruce was responsible for things on the field."

On the team not drawing, and lack of success off the field: "That's your opinion. We're doing extremely well on the business side."

On the impact on Reyna: "Claudio will be evaluated by the new manager, doubt it will have effect."

On who will determine the hiring: "Me."

On making mind up prior to meeting: "I was open-minded. We communicated, it was a very amicable and respectable conversation."

On any scenario for Arena to keep job: "If we agreed to a common vision, potentially."

On hiring another American. "Everything is open, we're not limiting to outside the US."

On the expansion draft: "Jeff (Agoos) will handle it if coach is not in place."
