A View from the All-Seater: On Clint
il Consigliere; March 30, 2007

In nothing but absolute desperation, Metro has worked a trade with Colorado for the washed-up Clint Mathis. While the actual terms are still sketchy (we do not know exactly what was given up or how much salary we are on the hook for), the trade seems to be a waste of whatever was given.

At the turn of the millennium, Clint was sent from Los Angeles to Metro in the "dispersal" draft when Luis Hernandez joined the league. Clint quickly dazzled on the east coast, scoring goals and showing everyone, including US National Team coach Bruce Arena, that he had the skills to play at the highest levels.

Unfortunately, Clint's train derailed when he tore the ACL in his knee. After going through the grueling rehab, Clint returned, but he was never the same. Gone was the cutting-edge and fearlessness that made him great for a couple of seasons. No longer did we see him collect the ball and run at defenders. Instead, we saw a Clint Mathis that was passive. He would get the ball, and look to pass first. He rarely went for goal, always looking to set-up someone else... someone with less ability.

While Clint managed to make it to the 2002 World Cup, The Bruce declared him unfit, and he saw limited action. For my money, the last glimpse of the good Clint Mathis came against South Korea, when he scored a great goal to put the US in front.

Since then, Clint went to Germany to play for Hannover 96. After a brief spell of good play, Clint found himself benched, and his temper ran him out of town. He again returned to MLS, this time with Real Salt Lake. I would be lying if I could tell you much about what he has done over the last few years, except that he was sent to Colorado and has managed to score all of five goals over two seasons.

So now, Clint returns. No doubt, with kegorator in hand and keg above his waste. I think he even has more chins than Big Pussy from The Sopranos. Unfortunately, the Clint we loved is in the same place as Big Pussy, and we are left with an unmotivated, unfit player who's skills have deteriorate away faster than approval ratings of GWB.

Due to the ineptitude of this club, they were unable to bring in a striker of any quality to boost the ranks... the ranks that include John Wolyniec and Jozy Altidore... and not much else. So, when an opposing defender glances at the team sheet before the match, let me ask you: Do you think he will have a shiver go up his spine seeing the two names listed above, as well as the name Clint Mathis?

I truly hope that Clint proves me wrong. I want him to score goals by the bucket load and I want him to lead us to some silverware. Unfortunately, I see this as impossible, and I see another difficult year coming for the club.
