Obscure Metro Files: One-game wonders (Part 2)
March 8, 2007

  • 2000: Russell Payne
Already covered in his own article, Payne is the lone goalkeeper on this list, playing eight disgusting minutes against Colorado.

  • 2001: Michael Butler and Fausto Klinger
Two more players previously discussed, Butler is the only one-game goalscorer, scoring the overtime game-winner after 24 minutes in Tampa Bay. Klinger (forever "the other Klinger") played 14 minutes against Chicago.

  • 2002: Brian Piesner and Marcelo Balboa
Where do we begin? First, we have Piesner, as the Rutgers alum and USL call-up from Atlanta set an unbreakable record, playing one injury time minute against Kansas City. He also played for the Charleston Battery. Then, we have Balboa... Ugh. The former US captain came over from Colorado in the offseason in a trade for a draft pick, and was all but slated to make his debut... But it never came, as weeks passed and some injury or another got aggravated. He finally graced the field for the last five minutes of the season, in the pathetic 3:0 collapse in New England. However, it is hard to say if his performance for Metro was any worse than his stint in the World Cup announcing booth.

  • 2006: Thiago Martins
And finally, after three years without one-game wonders, we have Martins, who came to Metro from Chivas USA in the horrible Ante Razov giveaway. The formerly-homeless Brazilian played 11 minutes against Salt Lake, almost scored, and then was promptly shipped to Colorado in a deal for Jean-Philippe Peguero. He played out the season with the Rapids before signing with Metro La Manga victim Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt this past offseason.
