The man to save this franchise?
June 28, 2006

Let's get it out of the way: Bruce Arena is an arrogant prick. There are no questions about it; the man spews arrogance from every orifice. That said, there is no better choice for the new Metro head coach, and Red Bull honchos should do everything in their power to make Bruce the new head Donkey.

The same Bruce Arena who just crashed and burned at the World Cup. The same Bruce Arena who seemed to blame everything -- but himself -- for the team's failures. The same Bruce Arena who talks down to everyone from reporters to other coaches. The same Bruce Arena who kept starting Jeff Agoos. The same Bruce Arena who hasn't coached on the club level in eight years. The same Bruce Arena who helped make the hated DC Scum the success that they are, the polar opposite of Metro.

The same Bruce Arena who is by far the best choice to save this franchise (on the field; off it, is a whole other story).

Wait; we've heard about "saviors" before on the coaching level. But Arena is not Carlos Alberto Parreira or Bora Milutinovic. We've emphasized it ever since Alexi Lalas (remember him?) was pondering replacing Bob Bradley (remember him?) with a high-profile European coach (which continued as Red Bull held an axe over Mo Johnston's head, an axe that finally fell): it is vital for a coach in MLS to have American soccer experience. Vital. And who has more American soccer experience than Arena?

But it goes farther than that; Arena has won on every level he's been at, from college to the pros to... well, he got the US a couple of Gold Cups and to the final eight of the World Cup, the latter nothing to frown at. And yes, the most recent team failed, but to be fair, it was a tough group, and the calls didn't go their way, and the team's supposed best players didn't show up, and...

Four years ago, Arena was the toast of U.S. soccer. But even then, he did not get any major European offers, and was said to be steamed that his World Cup success did not get him a job overseas. Now, when that success is just a memory, it seems highly unlikely that he can get that high-profile Euro offer. In fact, Arena's legend is in danger of crumbling. So is there a better place to resurrect it where so many others have failed, is there a better place to show that he can win that one where no one else could?

Would Bruce take this job? Who knows. We heard rumbles of this possibility even as US was still playing in Germany. At this point, he is still the US national coach. But that is not expected to last long. And it looks like Red Bull is interested. At least Bruce won't need to bring over Richie Williams...
