Second-half substitute Adolfo Valencia scored the game-winner in the 69th minute, and the MetroStars defeated C.D. FAS of El Salvador, 2-1, last night before 3,623 at the Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, New York.

Daniel Hernandez sent a free kick from 22 yards into the box that Valencia knocked past goalkeeper William Machon for the winner. The MetroStars outshot C.D. FAS 11-9 in a friendly that saw more than 30 players get into the game.

Rookie Martin Klinger opened the scoring in the 15th minute after some creative dribbling in front of the penalty arc to find a hole in the defense for the first score.

The MetroStars nearly scored again in the 27th minute when Mark Chung, wearing the captain's armband, got by two defenders to send a perfect through pass in the box to reserve player Alex Dixon. However, the referee called offside as Dixon looked to score one-on-one against Machon.

FAS tied the game moments into the second half as the MetroStars brought on an entirely new team with the exception of goalkeeper Paul Grafer and Klinger. Gilberto Morgus was brought down after a tangle with two MetroStars defenders just outside the box. He easily knocked the goal to Grafer's right to tie the game.

FAS did come close to tying the game in the final moments when Helman Monterrosa shot from 15 yards went over the crossbar, missing by inches.
